I'm Lisa Kelly, founder of Curly Life and the AuBonacci Brand—a hair care line dedicated to celebrating curly hair. Like many of you, I've stood in front of the mirror on numerous mornings, faced with unruly curls, wondering if there was a way to keep them vibrant and defined each morning, without committing to a full wash day.
That's when I uncovered the effectiveness of a curly refresh routine. This simple yet transformative approach has revolutionized my "off days," allowing me to embrace and love my curls anew with minimal effort.
So, if you're eager to maintain your curls' liveliness and definition beyond wash day, let's explore the how-to of refreshing curly hair together.
Curly refresh is a vital routine crafted to revitalize your curls, bringing back their bounce and definition without a full wash. This method not only prolongs the life of your hairstyles but also keeps your curls looking vibrant and well-shaped between washes. With a curly refresh, you're equipped to tackle frizz, reintroduce moisture, and boost curl definition efficiently and with little time required.
This approach is a game-changer for those with curly hair, offering a feasible way to keep your curls in prime condition on non-wash days. By mastering how to refresh curly hair without washing it, you ensure your curls remain beautiful and defined, ready to face the day with confidence.
Mastering the art of refreshing curly hair is essential for several compelling reasons:
Understanding how to effectively refresh curly hair offers curly-haired individuals a vital tool for keeping their curls looking healthy, defined, and vibrant with minimal effort.
Learning how to refresh curls effectively means enhancing their definition while keeping them healthy and vibrant. Here’s how you can achieve that:
Start by using a spray bottle to lightly mist your hair with water. Aim for wet hair—not soaking wet—to gently awaken and hydrate your curls. This initial step is crucial for adding just enough moisture to revitalize your curls without causing them to frizz or lose their shape, keeping them manageable for the next steps. Keep in mind you don't want your hair to be dripping wet but more slightly damp.
With either a curly detangling brush or your fingers, carefully work through any knots or tangles. It's essential to detangle gently to avoid disrupting your curls' natural pattern, reducing breakage, and maintaining the integrity of each curl. This careful detangling process sets the stage for more effective styling and healthier curls.
Next, lightly apply a leave-in conditioner to rehydrate and prep your curls for styling. This step not only locks in additional moisture but also ensures your curls are flexible and ready to receive styling products. Choose a leave-in conditioner that seals in moisture, minimizes frizz, and promotes the overall health of your hair.
The AuBonacci Leave In Curl Cream adds moisture and has a light holding power to preserve your curls natural shape.
It's time to lock in that hydration and set the stage for lasting curl definition. The AuBonacci Curl Styling Serum is a game-changer for this step, enriched with nutrients to seal in moisture and fortify your curls against environmental stressors.
Select a curl-defining gel like the AuBonacci High Hold Gel. Apply it evenly across your hair, section by section. This targeted application is key to enhancing each curl's shape and ensuring long-lasting definition without overloading your hair with product. Applying styling products in sections guarantees even coverage and contributes to uniform curl definition.
Opt to air dry or use a diffuser on a low heat setting to dry your curls without inducing frizz. If you’re using a diffuser, distribute the heat evenly and avoid disrupting the curls. This drying phase is critical for cementing your curls’ refreshed and defined look, with air drying being the gentlest option to preserve the curls' natural structure.
Elevate your curl game with the AuBonacci Styler, your go-to for adding volume to flat roots and directing your hair with precision. This step is crucial for those looking to infuse their curls with body and movement. The AuBonacci Styler is specially formulated to lift and separate curls at the root, providing a noticeable boost where you need it most.
After your curls are dry, proceed to gently scrunch them to break any hardened gel cast. This technique, known as SOTC, is essential for softening the curls and eliminating the "crunchy" texture, leaving your curls soft, bouncy, and naturally defined. This final touch enhances the refreshed look, ensuring your curls are ready to showcase their revitalized beauty.
Following these steps will not only refresh your curls but also ensure they remain beautifully defined and lively between wash days. This straightforward routine is designed to enhance the natural beauty of your curly hair, providing you with a practical solution to maintain your curls’ bounce, volume and definition with minimal effort.

Let's dive into the root of the issue—literally.
Flat roots are often a result of various factors, including genetics, the weight of your naturally curly hair, less-than-ideal styling techniques, and a lack of proper product support.
These flattened roots can dull the overall look of your curls, robbing them of their natural beauty. When the roots around your face and on the crown of your head don't cooperate, they can bring down even the most wonderful curly ends. But fear not; there's light at the end of this tunnel!
By understanding the causes, we can tackle the problem head-on with the right tools and techniques.
Dealing with flat roots can be a real struggle, especially for those of us with naturally curly hair. It's like no matter what we do, those roots seem determined to stay flat, dragging down our curls' overall volume and vitality.

To truly unlock the full potential of your curls, you need to nourish your hair from within. That means paying attention to what you put into your body as much as what you put on your hair. By incorporating The AuBonacci Styler into your regimen, you can amplify the results of your efforts. This innovative tool works harmoniously with your hair's natural texture, adding lift and volume from the roots while diffusing. Looking to add some oomph to your locks? Check out these innovative volumizing tips that go beyond the ordinary:
Create your own volumizing spray by mixing 1 tablespoon of sea salt or Epsom salt with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and spritz onto damp hair, then scrunch to enhance texture and add volume. For a scalp scrub, mix 1 tablespoon of sea salt or Epsom salt with your regular shampoo and gently massage into the scalp to remove product buildup and promote volume. Remember to moisturize afterwards!
To use cornstarch as a dry shampoo alternative, sprinkle a small amount onto your roots and gently massage it in. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then brush or shake it out to remove any excess powder. Your hair will be left clean and voluminous, with no oily residue.
Switch the side of your hair part regularly to prevent the rest from becoming accustomed to lying flat. Use a tail comb to create a new parting, then tousle your roots with your fingers to encourage volume.
Choose a conditioner suited to your hair type and apply it primarily to the lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly to ensure your hair is nourished without being weighed down.
Before washing your hair, use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp in circular motions for a few minutes straight. This stimulates blood flow to the scalp, promoting hair growth and enhancing volume. More tips for a healthy scalp.
Combine mashed avocado with a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of olive oil to create a nourishing hair mask. Apply the mixture to damp hair, focusing on the roots and ends, and leave it on for 20-30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Your hair will be left soft, shiny, and full of volume.
Apply a high hold gel to your hair and let your curls get 80% dry. Then style the roots with the AuBonacci Styler and your diffuser, to lock in that lift and volume from the roots for days.
Pair The AuBonacci Styler with the High Hold Gel to give your roots a chance for volume that lasts! This innovative tool gives you the ability to spot style where needed to add volume and direction at the root area while minimizing heat damage, ensuring long-lasting volume and bounce throughout the day.
Incorporating these techniques into your hair care and styling routine can significantly enhance the volume at your roots and throughout your hair. Not only do these methods offer an alternative to traditional styling tools and products, but they also promote healthier hair practices by reducing reliance on both heat styling tools and chemical treatments.
To master your curly hair, it's vital to grasp the nuances of your hair texture and curl pattern. Here's why these factors matter and how they shape your hair care routine:
The thickness or diameter of your hair strands determines your hair texture. There are three main categories determining hair texture:
Understanding your hair's texture often guides product selection and styling techniques. Fine hair thrives with lightweight products, while coarse hair benefits from richer formulas for moisture and control.
Curl patterns vary from loose waves to tight coils, categorized into:
Each type has subcategories (a, b, c) based on curl diameter and shape, influencing how your curls behave.
Understanding your curl pattern empowers you to tailor your routine accordingly. Type 2 waves thrive with lightweight styling for definition, while Type 4 coils need moisture-rich products to combat dryness and maintain elasticity.

Flat roots refer to a condition where the hair near the scalp appears limp, lacking volume and lift. This can occur due to various factors. In curly hair, it is largely genetics, with the hair growing out of the scalp at an angle rather than perpendicular, as straight hair grows. Flat roots are also impacted by the weight of the hair, inadequate styling techniques, or insufficient product support.
To address flat roots, it's essential to use products and tools designed to add volume and lift to the root area. Techniques like root lifting, diffusing, and spot styling can help add lift, and direct your roots so you have fuller, more voluminous curls all over.
Flat roots and heavy ends can be caused by genetics, hair density, length, and styling habits. Gravity can weigh down the ends of the hair, while the roots may lack volume due to environmental factors like genetics or product buildup.
To lift flat roots, consider using styling tools like The AuBonacci Styler, specifically designed to add volume and direction to the root area. Incorporating volumizing products and techniques into your styling routine can help lift and support the roots.
To prevent curly hair from appearing flat on top, focus on enhancing root volume and definition. Use styling products that cleanse and support your curls, and consider diffusing or air-drying your hair upside down to encourage lift at the roots. Incorporate styling products and tools to help you gain lift at the roots.
The top of curly hair may go flat due to factors such as genetics, gravity, product buildup, or inadequate styling techniques. To combat flatness, incorporate volumizing hair products and techniques into your routine to lift and support the curls at the root area.
To achieve volume on top of curly hair, start by applying volumizing products to damp hair, focusing on the root area. Use styling techniques such as diffusing, root lifting, or spot styling to create lift and definition at the crown, adding more volume and fullness to your curls.
This phenomenon, known as "pyramid hair," occurs when the roots of curly hair on top of the head lie against the scalp, while the curls away from the roots "bloom" with their natural curl pattern. To address this, focus on adding volume and lift at the root area to create balance and uniformity throughout your curls.
]]>Taming curly hair can feel like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces. But what if I told you that achieving gorgeously defined curls isn't as elusive as it seems?
That's right, you can say goodbye to frizz and hello to luscious curls with some simple, hair-friendly techniques.
So, are you ready to transform your hair game and unlock the secrets to defined curls without any damage?
Trust me, your curls are about to get the makeover of a lifetime!
Imagine each curl on your head standing out, smooth, and shaped to perfection without a hint of frizz. That's the dream, right? Defined curls are exactly that – each curl is well-defined, springy, and visibly distinct from the others, giving your hair that bounce and volume we all crave.
Why do we all chase after perfectly defined curls, you ask? Aside from the fact that they look absolutely fabulous, defined curls signify a healthy, well-cared-for mane. They reflect a balance of moisture, strength, and elasticity in your hair, making them a top goal for anyone blessed with a curly crown.
Understanding how to craft those perfect curls isn't just about looking good (though let's be honest, that's a big part of it). It's about hair health. When your curls are defined, they're happy, hydrated, and held just right. Here's why you should take your curl definition seriously:
This guide is your golden ticket to achieving those dreamy, defined curls without resorting to harsh methods that can hurt your hair. Ready to dive in? Your curls are about to get the care and definition they deserve.
Embarking on the journey to defined curls, we're not just discussing any routine. We're diving into a gentle, nurturing process that respects the integrity of your hair. Ready to meet your hair's new best friends? Let's roll out the red carpet for these game-changing steps.
First, let's talk about the base camp of your curl-defining expedition - cleansing. The goal? To clean without stripping away the good vibes (a.k.a. your hair's natural oils).
Enter the AuBonacci Curl Shampoo, a knight in shining armor for your curls. This isn't your ordinary shampoo; it's a gentle cleanser that knows how to treat your curls right, leaving them clean, hydrated, and ready for action.
Next up, we're diving deep into the hydration station. After cleansing, your curls are like sponges, ready to soak up all the moisture they can get.
The AuBonacci Curl Conditioner is the hydration hero, bringing elasticity and definition back to your curls. But why stop there? Layer on some AuBonacci Leave-in Curl Cream to lock in that moisture and add an extra shield against the day's challenges.
FUN FACT: The AuBonacci Curl Conditioner can also be used as a deep conditioner. Leave on your hair for 20 minutes and then rinse.
Now, for the fun part – styling! This step is where you sculpt those curls into the masterpiece they're meant to be.
You've got a powerhouse team with the trio of AuBonacci Leave-in Curl Cream, Curl Styling Serum, and High Hold Gel.
But here's the secret sauce: application technique. Finger coiling or scrunching? Choose your fighter. Both methods encourage your curls to form their best selves, enhancing natural patterns and securing them in place.
Last but certainly not least is drying your curls without inviting frizz to the party. Whether you're team diffuser or team air-dry, the goal is to keep those curls in their clumps.
This unity keeps frizz at bay, allowing each coil to dry into its defined, glorious shape. Remember, patience is key here; let your curls take their time to set and dry to enjoy frizz-free, defined results.
Once dry, if your curls feel a bit stiff, a tiny bit of AuBonacci Curl Styling Serum can be used when scrunching out the crunch (SOTC) to add softness and shine.
Remember, the goal is to treat your curls like delicate silk. Gentle handling at every stage of your routine ensures your curls remain defined, vibrant, and healthy.
There you have it – a roadmap to defined curls without the stress of damage. By integrating these steps into your routine, you're not just styling your hair but embracing a ritual that celebrates and nurtures your natural beauty.
So, what are you waiting for?
Dive in and let your curls shine in their defined, dazzling glory.
Defining your curls is an art and a science, blending the right techniques and styling products with a deep understanding of your hair's needs. Beyond the basics, there are some crucial considerations to ensure your curls look fantastic and are healthy and vibrant.
Yes, even curly hair needs regular trims. Getting rid of split ends prevents them from traveling up the shaft and causing more damage.
A well-shaped cut designed for curly hair can also enhance your curl pattern, making definition easier to achieve and maintain.
Check out insights from our curl specialists on crafting the perfect curly haircut here. They shed light on techniques that preserve your curls' integrity while encouraging their natural bounce and beauty.
While using heat styling tools for a quick fix is tempting, frequent use can lead to damage, dryness, and loss of curl pattern. Instead, focus on methods that enhance your curls without exposing them to excessive heat. Always apply a heat protectant and keep the setting low if you must use heat.
Protecting your curls at night is crucial for maintaining their definition and health. Use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction, or wrap your hair in a satin scarf or bonnet.
These materials help reduce friction as you move during the night, ensuring your curls look fresh and defined come morning.
Curl definition is a journey, not a destination. Here's how to embrace the process and elevate your curl game:
Curl training is a commitment to trying out different techniques to get the results you are looking for. If what you were doing was working, you probably wouldn't have read this far into this blog. Arriving at the best solution for your curls will take some trial and error, and some trial and success! Trust the process as you try out new routines. You will find the one that gives you the results you are looking for! Set aside some time to try out the techniques. This will lead to some new routines that will involve consistent care and and consistent results, as you and your hair find the "sweet spot". Celebrate each step towards healthier, more defined curls!
Balancing protein and moisture is key to resilient, defined curls. Protein treatments help rebuild and strengthen hair, while natural oils like argan, coconut, and jojoba add moisture and shine. This combination addresses the needs of various curl types, from wavy to coily, ensuring each strand is optimally nourished.
Sometimes, traditional methods need a little boost. Here's where alternatives come into play, offering innovative ways to achieve and enhance your curl definition:
Hair plopping is a technique that uses a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel to gently absorb excess water while encouraging your curls to form and set. This method reduces frizz and helps maintain your curls' shape as they dry.
Check out more details on the art of hair-plopping in one of our recent blog articles.
For curls needing extra encouragement, finger coiling is a technique where you manually twist small sections of hair around your finger to define the curl. It's time-consuming but can produce stunning results, especially on hair that struggles to hold its natural curl pattern.
Above all, keeping your curls moisturized is the cornerstone of curl definition. Well-hydrated hair is more elastic, less prone to breakage, and easier to style. Use shampoos and conditioners that provide moisture and do not strip your hair, and use leave-in conditioners to ensure your curls are quenched all day long.
Diving into the world of curl definition, we've navigated through key steps from gentle cleansing to artful styling techniques, all aimed at achieving those enviable, healthy curls.

]]>In this article, we will dive into the causes of frizz, how to prevent it, and the best ways to tame those frizzy curls, ensuring that your hair exudes nothing but timeless beauty and sophistication.
Key Takeaways:
Hydration is paramount in the battle against frizz, starting in the shower.
Begin with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner with ingredients like Avocado Oil, Grapefruit, and Lemongrass Extracts, that deeply hydrate and strengthens curls. Massage your scalp as you shampoo and condition, to increase circulation. Keep in mind hot water can dissolve lipids and remove many of the conditioners that you have just used on your hair, so shampoo with warmer water, and after your conditioner, rinse with cooler water, so as not to strip off all the beneficial ingredients you have just applied!
While hair is still wet, apply a leave-in moisturizer, and a serum to lock in the moisture. Squish your hair to make sure the product is completely distributed. Hair should be dripping! For those looking to elevate their curl game, the transformative technique of hair-plopping is a must-try. This method enhances your natural curl pattern, helps reduces frizz, and adds definition.

Ditching traditional towels in favor of jersey or microfiber can prevent roughing the hair shaft and causing excess frizz, as either are gentler than cotton towels.
After plopping your hair for approximately 15 minutes, you will want to squeeze out the excess moisture and product and then apply styling gel. Don't be shy. Don't be afraid of Crunchy Hair! This temporary state is a key to being frizz free! When your hair dries and is crunchy, you will squeeze the crunchy parts, releasing the cast that has formed. Then your hair will be softer, with definition and shine that will last for days, and a level of frizz protection that will surprise and delight you!

Embracing your natural texture is pivotal to the health and style of your curly hair. It's about working with the curls, not against them, ensuring they look their best every day.
The debate between finger combing and using a wide-tooth comb is settled by preference and hair type. Finger combing allows for gentle detangling and can help define curls without disrupting their natural pattern.
On the other hand, a wide-tooth comb can be used for a more thorough detangling session, especially when hair is wet and conditioned. Both methods prevent unnecessary frizz and breakage in dry hair.
Serums are potent allies in the fight against frizz, offering concentrated moisture and protection. The key is to use them sparingly; a little goes a long way in controlling frizz. Distribute a small amount evenly through damp hair to seal in moisture, enhance shine, and prevent frizz. Check out the AuBonacci Curl Styling Serum to help you combat frizz and maintain moisture.
Scrunching is a tried and true technique to boost volume and define curls. After applying your styling products, gently scrunch your hair from the ends upwards toward the scalp. This encourages the natural curl pattern to spring back and creates voluminous, bouncy curls.

]]>For years, when I tried to do my hair, it would end up in tears, sitting in front of the mirror with countless products surrounding me and hair everywhere. Curly hair is truly a journey of self-discovery, self-love, and accepting the traits that make you different.
Now a young adult I have found so much love inside me for my curly hair and fully embrace my naturally curly hair year-round. I want to share my journey- the mistakes, the holy grails, and other tips and tricks to help my fellow curly-haired sisters learn to manage.
To make their hair care routine simpler and more efficient for their lives, but also to help them learn how to love their uniquely curly hair and embrace the curls. I cannot promise I will have all the answers and that my tips and tricks are one-size-fits-all.
The curly hair community is vast and with ever-changing trends and information; what works for one might not work for all. It’s all about trying new things and experimenting with your hair until you find your groove.
As a child growing up in my community, the standards for hair and what was acceptable hair for the outside world were based on general societal standards of the time.
My hair was always slicked back into the tightest ponytail and gel-flat to my head to ensure it was straight and did not have any lumps or bumps. My mother did my hair daily. My knots were her daily arm workout and I hated getting my hair done because of all the pulling and tugging.
As a child, my mother would often cut my hair for me. She did my hair often in her bedroom, and it was a bonding time for us. We often watch reality TV together.
My mother is and always will be my best friend. She’s my hero. My mother often straightened my hair because I expressed that I wanted her to. She always did a fantastic job straightening my hair and with the praise I got when my hair was straight, I believed it was better; that is how I connected the dots.
Instilling confidence in young girls with curly hair is crucial because we often feel shame for having difficult hair.
By adolescence, I was straightening my hair daily like most curly-haired women. I had so much heat damage that my hair wouldn’t even curl when wet; it was dead, dry, and damaged.
My curl pattern was gone, and I fell into the vicious cycle of straightening my hair due to the long-term damage.
Many of my peers didn’t believe I had curly hair. I had a best friend, and she didn’t believe I had curly hair until I showered at her place one day, and I came out of the shower with my curly roots and dead ends. She blurted out, “Your hair is curly?” I often envied other girls in my class with straight, long hair. As a young girl, I had not learned yet about shrinkage.
Shrinkage is inches you may lose on your overall hair length due to your curl pattern. In my freshmen year of high school, I decided to go cold turkey and begin my natural curl journey.
My hair was so damaged that I would wear it up only as it was the only way I knew how to manage it. I felt like my hair wasn’t versatile; I could only wear it up or down, whereas my straight-haired peers had long straight hair that could be braided and styled infinitely.
In my junior year, I stumbled on YouTube. I began to research my hair and how I could embrace it. My first curly hair tip that changed my life was sleeping with it up.
Known as the pineapple or plopping, it is the concept of sleeping with your hair up to avoid frizz and knots. This was a game-changer. It was the first time I didn’t wake up and have to spend thirty minutes detangling my hair.
Then, I learned to use a wide tooth comb, and that was another life-changing event. I used a regular brush and sometimes a paddle brush to detangle my hair while it was dry. Oh my, thinking of brushing my hair dry with a paddle brush, now as a grown adult, makes my skin crawl.
Soon, it quickly became a renaissance sparked by YouTube on how to manage my curly hair. The internet gave me so much knowledge about my hair. I began joining forums online that were specifically for curly-haired women, and the knowledge flew through me like a river.
My advice for young girls with curly hair is to find your curly hair community, whether it be online or in person. Having peers and knowledgeable others who can provide advice and tips can really change your perspective on your hair.
Hair care is something that often evolves as you grow. As an infant, hair care is very minimal due to the natural quality of baby hair.
It is soft and bouncy naturally and thus doesn’t need much help. However, as your hair matures, it needs more maintenance and TLC. As a teenager, I used mostly drugstore products.
These drug store products work for my teenage hair, but I had to switch things up as an adult. Around twenty, my hair switched up on me like curly hair tends to do, and I had to get a new routine. I used a co-wash paired with a moisture-promoting conditioner and an intense leave-in conditioner.
For the longest time, I used conditioner as a hair styling product but soon learned that was not good for the health of my scalp and began to venture into curly hair styling products.
I started by first trying to make my own but soon learned I wasn’t a chemist and should probably return to my curly hair research to find the correct styling product.
This is when I learned about the different types of hair density, porosity, and curly types. I learned my specific curl pattern and the unique characteristics that made my hair unique.
Embracing one’s curly hair is more than just a hairstyle. It reinforces the concept that it’s okay to be different.
For decades, there has been a specific beauty standard that women are held to, and this consists of straight and neat hair that doesn’t defy gravity. Daring to go against the status quo is a fearless assertion against these unrealistic beauty standards put upon women by society.
Curly hair cannot be tamed and doesn’t need to be. Embracing my curly hair was the best thing I have ever accomplished. It changed my life and turned me into a bright light of self-love that drew positivity into my life.
I felt my identity become more solidified and more unique. I began defining who I was with my curly hair instead of trying to deny it. As the world propels towards a more diverse and unique population, we are beginning to see all hair types appreciated and loved.
Curly hair is no longer deemed unprofessional but as a crown of a person’s unique heritage and genetic makeup.
Overall, growing up with curly hair taught me many valuable lessons.
Firstly, I learned how the power of community can grow love and appreciation for oneself and that community is the very fabric of what makes us human.
Second, I learned to embrace my uniqueness and to not give my time to anyone who didn’t like me. People who put you down do so because they are truly hurting on the inside. Misery truly loves company, and you must always hold your head high so your crown does not fall.
And lastly, but most importantly, that curly hair is gorgeous. Curly hair is unique. No two strands are alike, similar to a snowflake.
I can tell you that curly hair is a gift, not a curse. Or at least that is what I would tell my younger self if I could go back in time. It’s an invitation to be fearless, regal, and extraordinary.
It’s an invitation to go against the status quo and have a little fun. My curls bounce when I walk and provide a shield of confidence in my hair and in my self-identity. Loving your curly hair will unlock an unmatched power within you, and it will fill you with love for yourself and those around you.
1. Only brush/detangle your hair when its wet
2. Only use a wide tooth comb when brushing curly hair
3. Brush your hair like it’s made of silk. Brush with patience and be gentle
4. Never sleep with your hair down and free. Always tie up and secure while you sleep.

Embrace your hair's natural elegance with insights from a true curl whisperer, and prepare for a journey to your most beautiful curls yet.
If you have curly hair, chances are you’ve struggled with your hair at some point and time in your life. Whether it has been a horrible haircut, trouble with frizz control or have been made fun of because your hair just doesn’t behave like everyone else’s.
We have all stressed about “What’s the weather going to be like on my wedding day? Or Prom? Or having to pack a cabinet full of products including your OWN blow dryer AND diffuser for your next vacation.
These are the things most of us with curly hair need to think about and be prepared for day in and day out. Lucky for us, nowadays there are curly hair specialists all over the country to not only to teach and guide us as how to style curly hair but also cut it properly so that the curls are softly layered into each other.
A true curly hair specialist understands the many different types of textures and curl patterns.
Naturally curly hair is typically not consistent.
Curl patterns can be different even on one head! Sometimes the texture can be very different on one side than the other.
A trained specialist can consult with the client and determine what cutting technique and shape would work best and then teach the client how to style it, and with what product.
Most stylists have their favorite product line they believe in. That being said, it is my belief that if you find something that works for you and all your curly hair goals are met, use what works best for you.
But the right cut can improve the look even more!
A curly haircut is typically a technique that is incorporated into a “shape” that allows the curls to lay better. Doesn’t matter if you wear your hair short or long, the layers have a softness and blend unlike a traditional haircut that may leave steps or shelves in the style.
There are no harsh lines when a specialist cuts the curls. The curls speak to the stylist and each cut is custom to the curl pattern of every individual.
One of the many perks is that the style will grow “down” rather than “out”. Also, the maintenance on the cut is very low. Most clients need to see their stylist anywhere from 2 to 4 times a year!
Although these cuts are a bit more expensive than a regular cut, you are actually saving time and money because of how long the shape will last.
A curly hair specialist should also take the time to demonstrate a styling technique to fit the clients lifestyle.
Some people like to take the time and effort to style their hair, while others prefer more of a wash and go schedule. Either way, choosing the best product for the curl type and texture is important along with the technique that best fits the clients lifestyle.
Curly hair success starts in the chair. The key is learning to enhance the curls with moisturizing styling products. This will keep the hair hydrated without sacrificing hold!
Your curl specialist can suggest “how” to apply the product, the explain the diffusing process to set the curls strong so that they may last several days in between washings.
So as one decides to accept and embrace their curls, I would encourage them to get a referral or search for a curly hair specialist.
The cutting technique itself will make a huge difference in the shape of the style. The added bonus is learning how to style with success.
Stepping out with confidence without worrying about if your hair will frizz or go out of control is an amazing life changing experience! Find your specialist today!
]]>Close your eyes and picture this: you're standing before the bathroom mirror, hairbrush in hand, when you spot it – your very first gray hairs. It's not just a strand; it's a moment that awakens a mix of emotions and kickstarts an unexpected journey. Sound familiar? We've all had our rendezvous with that elusive white hair.
As for me, I used to be a loyal member of Team Hair Dye. Like clockwork, I'd visit the salon, surrender to the stylist's magic, and emerge with a head of luxurious, brown locks that seemed to defy time itself. But then, the pandemic hit, and life took an unexpected turn. Suddenly, I was faced with a decision – continue with dyed hair or embrace the silver fox tail emerging on my right side and wear it like a badge of honor.
Life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths, doesn't it? One of the intriguing trends I've noticed, particularly among us fabulous folks in our fifties, is the wholehearted embrace of our grey hair. And you know what's even more remarkable? We're doing it not because we have to but because we genuinely want to.
What's behind this shift? It's like finding a hidden treasure - unique beauty deeply rooted in authenticity and self-acceptance. We're choosing to let our curly gray hair shine, and it's not just about fashion; it's about embracing our true selves.
The Motivation Behind the Shift
But what's prompting this change? Well, it's a multi-faceted answer. For some, it's realizing that we don't need to chase the illusion of eternal youth. It's a celebration of the aging process, the wisdom and experiences life has gifted us.
And let me tell you, it's liberating! It's about breaking free from societal norms and redefining beauty on our own terms. It's about celebrating the unique qualities that come with age and letting our authentic selves radiate.
Now, let's dive into the nitty-gritty of graying hair – it's not just about a color change; it's a reflection of your journey, wisdom, and beauty. This transformation is more than skin deep; it's about understanding the science that underlies those shimmering gray hairs.
First off, it's important to know that gray hair isn't just a matter of losing color; it's about a shift in the very structure of your hair.
You see, gray hair often lacks some of the proteins that pigmented hair boasts, which can make it feel drier and more prone to damage. It's like your hair is on a quest for wisdom, and it's picking up some unique characteristics along the way.
Another thing to note is that gray hair is running low on melanin, the pigment that helps shield against the sun damage. Your hair might need extra love and care when it comes to sun protection.
Think of it as giving your hair a sun hat – stylish and practical!
But let's get down to the core of it all. The color of our hair is determined by pigments produced by melanocytes within the hair shaft and the hair follicles themselves.
As we age, these melanocytes gradually reduce their pigment production, leading to the gradual graying process. It's a natural part of life's journey, like the rings in a tree trunk, each year leaving its mark.
Alright, now that we've cracked the scientific code of gray hair, let's talk about keeping those fabulous gray curls in tip-top shape. After all, it's not just about the color; it's about flaunting healthy and happy natural locks. Here are some gray hair tips:
One crucial aspect of caring for your gray hair is moisture. Gray hair tends to be coarser and drier, so you'll want to make sure it stays well-hydrated.
Incorporating moisturizing shampoo and conditioners will keep your curly hair moisturized and your gray hair looking healthy. If you find that you need more moisture, try deep conditioning treatments, as they can work wonders.
These treatments help replenish moisture, soften your curls, and reduce that pesky frizz. Think of it as a spa day for your hair, and who doesn't love a little pampering?
Tips: The AuBonacci Curl Care Duo works amazingly on my curly hair that is lacking moisture. The AuBonacci Curl Care kit has an amazing grapefruity fragrance. The conditioner has amazing slip, making it easy to comb my curly locks after shampooing.
Here's a secret weapon – products specifically designed for curly hair have the same properties needed for gray hair - Moisture. These gems are tailored to address the moisture level of curly pepper hair. They can work wonders in replenishing lost moisture and enhancing the vitality of your curls, as well as benefiting your silver hair.
Remember, it's not just about keeping silver locks and curls healthy; it's also about embracing your natural beauty. Each silver strand is a testament to your journey, your wisdom, and your unique brand of beauty.
So, whether you opt for AuBonacci products or other specialized gray hair products, it's all about making those curls shine and celebrating the confidence that comes with embracing the journey of natural gray hair.
Ah, the age-old dilemma – to dye that first gray hair or not? It's a decision that many of us face, and it's perfectly normal to ponder the pros and cons. So, let's dive into this choice and explore your options.
Ultimately, the decision to color your hair or embrace your natural gray is deeply personal. Some opt for the convenience and changeability coloring provides, while others appreciate the beauty of their natural hair color.
Alright, let's talk about the art of nurturing that gray curly hair. We've established that graying hair can be a bit temperamental, so let's dive into how to keep it looking its best.
Gray hair has a knack for being coarser and more prone to dryness. That's where moisturizing and conditioning come to the rescue. You'll want to keep your gorgeous gray curly hair well-hydrated to maintain its vibrancy.
Here's a secret weapon – products specifically designed for gray hair. These gems are tailored to address the unique needs of your silver hair. They can work wonders in replenishing lost moisture and enhancing the vitality of your curls.

Enter the world of "Hair Plopping," a rather inelegant term to describe an exquisite technique designed to accentuate your curly locks' natural elegance. This age-old method, known for its transformative prowess, can play a key role in nurturing and enhancing the beauty and ease of your cherished curls.
In this exclusive guide, we invite you to enter a realm of sophistication and luxury, where we'll unravel the secrets of hair plopping. Discover how to "Plop Your Hair" with finesse, embracing the enchanting magic uniquely tailored to curly hair. Mastering this technique will bring ease to your beauty routine, help control frizz, define curls, nurture hair health, and save precious time.
Hair plopping is an artful technique tailored for wet, curly hair that defines and nurtures its natural beauty. A key to beautiful curls is forming curl clumps, which are encouraged with hair plopping. Starting with freshly washed and conditioned wet hair, this process only requires a soft jersey T-shirt or microfiber towel as your canvas.
As you gently plop your wet hair onto this delicate material, it gracefully falls into a circular bundle—a plop. Securing it with an elegant hairband or clip allows your curls to luxuriate in the gentle embrace of the fabric for around 15 to 30 minutes.
This exquisite ritual transforms wet hair into a canvas of timeless elegance, taming frizz and enhancing curl definition.
Hair plopping offers a lavish experience that elevates the enduring charm of your unique curls. Embrace the art of hair plopping, and let your curls shine like never before.
Curly hair plopping, a method where wet hair is gently plopped onto a soft cotton T-shirt or towel and secured at the top of your head, offers many enduring benefits for those with curls.
In essence, embracing the art of hair plopping allows you to promote curl clumping, control frizz, define curls, nurture hair health, and save time, all while celebrating the enduring charm of your unique curls. Elevate your curly hair routine with this exclusive technique and watch your curls shine like never before.
Plopping curly hair is an art form, and like any art, it requires the right tools to create a masterpiece. Here are the essential elements to elevate your hair-plopping experience, enhancing the beauty of your unique curl pattern.
Start with freshly washed hair that's damp but not dripping wet. The moisture is key to the success of your plopping venture.
The canvas for your plopping masterpiece is a soft jersey T-shirt or microfiber towel. These materials gracefully cradle your curls, ensuring a luxurious experience from the beginning.
Elevate your plopping game with premium hair products that nurture and enhance your curls from the exclusive AuBonacci line. These products include:
This conditioner offers a range of benefits, including:
This serum is a game-changer for your curls. It offers numerous benefits, including:
Achieve long-lasting hold and control for your curls with this high-hold gel. It comes with several advantages, including:
With the right tools and the exclusive AuBonacci products in hand, you're ready to embark on your journey into the world of hair plopping and unveil the enduring allure of your cherished locks.
Plopping is an exquisite technique that can work wonders for enhancing the beauty of your wavy or curly hair. Whether you have wavy, curly, or even straight hair with a hint of wave, plopping can help you achieve a stunning look.
Begin your plopping journey by washing and conditioning your hair as usual. Your hair should be clean and damp but not dripping wet for the best results.
Prepare your chosen soft jersey T-shirt or microfiber towel—the canvas for your plopping masterpiece. While the material makes a difference, the most important thing is how you use it on your hair. With hair plopping, there is no rubbing or roughing up the hair shaft.
Place your towel or jersey T-shirt on a chair seat or on a bed. Bend forward gently and flip your head, allowing your hair to fall naturally onto the center of the fabric. Plop gently to not disrupt your curly locks. I will often bend over first and give my head a little shake to make sure all my curls are pointed down so when I move over the bed or chair, I simply move my head down until I am touching the surface. This ensures that the fabric envelops your hair.
Once your hair is elegantly plopped, pull the edges of the fabric up towards the back of your neck and secure with a knot, fold or clip. This should be snug, but not overly tight. This position ensures that your plopped hair is comfortable and secure.
The amount of time to plop will vary by individual of course; for me it tends to works best at approximately 20 minutes. During this time, your hair will gracefully embrace the moisture, and its natural wave or curl pattern will start to take shape without the weight of your hair having to fight against gravity. This helps with volume at the roots. During this time your hands are free, so you can dress, apply makeup, and get a cup of coffee.
When you are ready, gently unwrap your hair from the fabric. You'll notice improved curl clumps or wave definition, and slightly less wet hair.
Now, you have two options: allow your hair to dry naturally for a beautifully relaxed look, or style your waves or curls as desired. If I am going to style my hair from this point, I will gently squeeze out some of the remaining moisture and then apply gel by rubbing it into my hands and gently squeezing my hair to distribute it. Then I diffuse all over, encouraging my curl by gently squeezing or lifting with the diffuser as I diffuse. When my hair is almost dry, I use the AuBonacci Styler to lift and direct my roots on the crown and around my face. With the AuBonacci Styler in place, and a spritz of finishing spray before you diffuse each area, you will have wonderful results.
Plopping your hair elegantly is a simple yet luxurious way to embrace your natural wave or curl pattern. Whether you have wavy or curly hair or want to enhance the subtle waves in straight hair, this technique can help you achieve the timeless beauty you desire. With a touch of elegance and the art of plopping, you're well on your way to unveiling the enduring allure of your cherished locks.
Plopping is not just a technique; it's a ritual that can transform your haircare routine. To elevate your plopping experience and enhance luxury, consider these secret tips:
Before you plop your hair, gently squeeze out any excessive water using a soft microfiber towel so your hair isn't completely dripping wet. This ensures that your hair isn't overly saturated, allowing the plopping process to work its magic most effectively.
Avoid tightly wrapping your hair like a traditional towel turban when plopping it onto the fabric. Instead, let your hair fall naturally onto the fabric, creating a gentle plop. This technique promotes a more relaxed and elegant result.
Throughout the entire process, handle your hair with gentleness and grace. Avoid any aggressive movements that may disrupt your hair's natural pattern.
After you've unwrapped your hair from the fabric, you have the choice to air dry it for a relaxed look or style it according to your preferences. Both options can result in an elegant and luxurious appearance.
By following these tips, you can enhance the luxury of plopping, ensuring that your hair benefits from this technique's timeless beauty. With a touch of elegance and the art of plopping, you'll unveil the enduring allure of your cherished locks, one plop at a time.
After the luxurious plopping process, your hair is ready to shine with its newfound beauty. To maintain those bouncy curls and luscious locks, as well as ensure they are completely dry and frizz-free, here are some post-plopping maintenance tips and recommended styling products:
Sometimes, after plopping, your hair may have a slight "crunchy" feel due to the products applied. This is a good thing! To achieve those soft and bouncy curls, gently scrunch your hair with your hands to break the product cast. This will leave your curls feeling luscious and natural, with definition that lasts.
While plopping helps to control frizz and enhance curl definition, it's essential to ensure your hair is completely dry before scrunching or heading out. You can use a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment on low heat to speed up the process while maintaining your curls' shape.
To maintain your curls' beauty and prevent frizz, consider using the following styling products:
With these, you can enjoy your hair's newfound elegance and embrace those bouncy, frizz-free locks. With the right care and products, your locks will continue to shine with sophistication.
Q1. Can I plop my hair with straight or wavy hair?
Q3. Can you use a hairdryer after plopping to dry your hair?
Q6. Can I plop my hair overnight?
Q7. Will plopping work for all curl types?
Q9. Can I plop my hair if it's very short?
Q10. Can I plop wavy hair?
Remember that plopping is a versatile technique that can be adjusted to suit your hair type and preferences. Experiment to find the best approach for your individual needs.
Hair plopping is elegant in its simplicity and is suitable for various hair types, enhancing natural waves and curls.
With the right tools and premium products like the Curl Styling Serum and Curl Styling Final Touch Spray, it minimizes manipulation, delivering luscious, frizz-free curls. Embrace the plopping technique, and perform your hair beauty rituals with grace—from washing to gentle scrunching—to celebrate your unique curl pattern.

The art isn't only in day one curl results but lies in mastering the exclusive allure of SECOND-DAY CURLY HAIR (and beyond!)
Today, we dive into some tried and true refresh techniques to keep your curls opulent without a daily rewash. Ready to unlock the secrets to ageless curly allure? Join me on this exquisite journey.
We're all familiar with the initial magic of wash day (first-day) curls that are absolutely radiant. Fresh from the wash, they are the epitome of definition and bounce. No impact from humidity, static, wind, or friction against pillows, scarves, or seats.
The challenge is day two (and three..) after your curls experience all the potential impacts of a vibrant day of living. Second-Day Curls are a pivotal moment when your curls, while still radiant, might feel slightly less energetic.
This is the moment when the art of "Refreshing Curly Hair" shines—a moment to rejuvenate those slightly languid curls without an entire wash ritual.
Can one still exude elegance on day two? The answer is an unequivocal yes.
Refreshing curly hair is more than just a practice. It's an exclusive lifestyle for those who value timeless beauty. Let's delve into its profound benefits:
To enjoy curls that epitomize efficiency and splendor, one must become acquainted with hair refreshment. If you haven't tried these techniques, you will be pleasantly surprised. Give them each a try and let us know which give you the best results for your hair!
As you embark on this quest, it is important to know where you started. Did you apply styling products when you initially washed and styled your hair? If so, simply applying water will often reactivate your hair products, easily giving you the refresh you desire.
If you lightly applied styling products, or used a minimal number of products, you will want to add some products to your refresh routine in addition to water.
For refresh options, equip yourself with the following essentials:
Refreshing curly hair by spritzing it with water is a common technique to revive and maintain the shape and definition of your curls without having to go through the entire washing and styling process.
This method is especially useful for people with curly hair types 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C who want to extend the life of their curls between wash days. Here are step-by-step guides on how to use 3 different techniques for your curly hair refresh.
Keep in mind that for each, you can do all of your hair, or just a few clumps, or just a few strands. I will outline the techniques for a full refresh for each of these:
Step 1: Detangle Your Hair For the all over spritz, before applying water, it's a good idea to gently detangle your curls to remove any knots and prevent breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to carefully detangle, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. Never start from the roots.
Step 2: Section Your Hair Divide your hair into sections. This makes it easier to ensure that all parts of your hair receive the necessary moisture evenly. You can use hair clips or hair ties to keep each section separate.
Step 3: Spritz Your Hair Starting with one section at a time, lightly spritz your hair with the water from the spray bottle. Hold the bottle about 6-8 inches away from your hair to disperse the mist evenly. Avoid soaking your hair; you want it to be damp but not dripping.
Step 4: Scrunch and Smooth After spritzing, gently scrunch your hair with your hands to encourage your curls to bounce back to their natural shape. You can also smooth and reshape individual curls if needed. Do this by running your wide tooth comb or denman brush through the clump to smooth it, then shake it, and gently squeeze to reshape the curl. You can apply a small amount of gel to your hands and distribute it through your hair for added definition. To not disrupt your curls, you can do this by gently squeezing your curls or using the praying hands technique.
Step 5: Repeat for Each Section Continue the spritzing and scrunching process for each section of your hair until your entire head is refreshed.
Step 6: Air Dry or Diffuse You can either allow your hair to air dry naturally or use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer to speed up the drying process. Make sure to use a low heat setting and gently squeeze your curls as you dry to enhance definition.
Step 7: Lift Your Roots Do you need some extra lift on top? This is a great time for the AuBonacci Styler. Use it with your diffuser to touch up any areas that have fallen flatter than you like. A quick spritz with final touch spray will hold your results!
Refreshing curly hair with a water spritz is a simple yet effective way to maintain your curls and extend the time between washes while keeping your hair healthy and well-hydrated.
Step 1: Select the Strands Select the pieces of your hair that are standing out to you as frizzy or have lost their definition or bounce. This is a particularly useful technique for your face framing curls.
Step 2: Completely wet each Strand Starting with one strand at a time, wet your hair with the water from the spray bottle.
Step 3: Smooth and squeeze each strand Using your fingers, and the paddle brush if possible, smooth the strands. Then gently squeeze to bring the curl shape back. You can also finger coil these strands; See finger coiling below.
This can seem tedious at first, but a 5 minute investment can give you an incredibly fresh head of beautiful curls.
For this approach, prepare to get wet. Definitely have a towel handy! Use this technique when the top layers of your hair have had it; they are frizzy, they are looking very unhappy. You fear you will have to do a full wash day to recover- but try this first!
Step 1: Gather Sections from the Crown Gather larger sections of top layers of your hair, from the crown, and use your spray bottle and the sink to get them completely wet, one segment at a time.
Step 2: Smooth and Clump Once each segment is wet, brush through it with a paddle brush to smooth out the strands and encourage clumps to form.
Step 4: Shake and Squeeze Then gently shake and gently squeeze to encourage the curl. This will definitely reactivate your styling products.
Sometimes, curls need a gentle nudge to show their full beauty. Through Finger Coiling, we can help these curls embrace their natural elegance and shine.
This method takes a section of your wet hair and uses your fingers to shape it into a nice curl. It's a way to say to your hair, "You're meant to be a beautiful curl, not just a frizzy wave."
You can also use tools like a brush handle to help shape those curls even more.
Whether you use just your fingers or a brush, it's all about giving those curls a little extra care and getting them into the perfect shape. You will need to check out some videos on this technique, and practice a bit.
Have you ever wished your curls had a bit more volume at the top?
The AuBonacci Styler is here to boost your roots, providing lift right where you want it most.
Before using this tool, make sure your hair is a bit dry, roughly 85% of the way there. It performs best when your hair is damp, not wet. Also, you must use a styling product such as a high hold gel or a final touch finishing spray for results to last, just as you do anytime you are styling hair.
And just like that, your second-day curls transition from plain to spectacularly bouncy!
After layering, coiling, and diffusing, your curls might be looking on point but feeling a tad crunchy. This is a good thing. This means a "cast" has formed around your hair shaft, which lets you know you have put the right products on to help protect your hair from environmental factors and to keep moisturizing products in. But, we do want to release the soft curls under the cast. It's time to "Scrunch Out The Crunch" or SOTC.
And there you have it! Lusciously soft second day (and beyond) curls with zero crunch.
Lisa's Bonus Advice! Before diving into the SOTC method, dab some Curl Serum onto your palms. This graces your hands with a delightful scent and ensures your curls achieve an unmatched softness.
Your curls will be both tender and stunning!
Embracing second-day curly hair can be a challenge. Some additional insights you might appreciate:
The gorgeous results you can achieve by embracing various refresh techniques will give you wonderful confidence. Adopting the refresh methods gives you options no matter where you find yourself. Keep a mini paddle brush in your purse, and you can always access a sink to do some single strand touch ups if you are out and your hair has decided to go in it's own direction!
Eager for more curly insights? My upcoming piece will dive into "Hair Plopping" - a topic sure to intrigue. Stay radiant, and keep rocking those curls!
]]>Having curly hair is like being part of an exclusive club. There's beauty, uniqueness, and a touch of wildness in every twist and turn of those curls. Certain things are understood; for instance, if a stranger with curly hair asks what products you use on your curly hair, you are definitely going to tell her. If a stranger with straight hair says they have a daughter with curly hair and don't know what to do, you are going to give her as much information as you can! This is all done in the spirit of "we're in this together, and if anyone figures it out, please tell all of us!!".
First: Denial.
For years, many of us have tried to fit into a mold, straightening and styling their hair to look "normal". Irons (yes actual irons before flat irons existed), juice cans (look that one up), chemicals, blow drying and pulling, stretching...and chemicals, permanents, relaxers. Leaving the question, what is normal? But more than that: Who decided this, and when? Because none of this is normal. We say forget all of that. Dismiss it as ridiculous, because it is. Embracing your unique curl type, that's what needs to be your new normal. You decide, for yourself, what is YOUR normal. And so much empowerment will come from that. It is about you, stepping into yourself. So, Embrace the Curl, and let this guide help you every step of the way.
Introducing AuBonacci’s Curly Series: A Celebration of Natural Beauty
We love this series. Why? Because this blog is the first step of an amazing journey we're about to take with you. It's all about celebrating and understanding the magic of curly hair. So, hold onto your seats! Every blog post in this series is crafted to equip you with the tips and tricks to fully embrace your curls with pride and joy.
I started out with straight hair, but puberty announced other plans, and the arrival of this strange new texture hair at age 12 made no sense to me. I wore a handkerchief for a year! I longed for my straight hair back, but worse than that, I felt flawed, at my core. To me, it seemed that something had gone wrong with my hair- why couldn't it be fixed? What was wrong with me? This was reinforced by people around me with questions like, "can't you do anything with that?". It was devastating and deeply impacted my sense of self.
Then, a surprise in my 20s made me realize the beauty of my natural curls. People loved it! It was completely eye-opening, to go from the girl who felt defective to the girl that people said "I wish I had your hair!!" to. It was a wake-up call to love and embrace my curls. But of course, as anyone with curls knows, it wasn't that simple.....I had so much to learn.
To "Embrace Your Curls" is more than just a phrase about hair; it's an invitation to self-acceptance and to a celebration of your own uniqueness. This is an evolution.
At its core, it means appreciating the natural beauty of your curly hair without feeling the need to conform to societal standards of "normal" hair. It's about learning to stop comparing yourself to others in any way.
Imagine stepping away from the flat irons, chemical treatments, and embracing the spirals, waves, and coils that naturally spring from your scalp. Be fascinated!
This is a call to break free from artificial standards and to find pride in the individuality your hair represents.
By truly accepting and celebrating your curly hair, you’re not just making a statement about beauty; you're expressing a deeper understanding and appreciation of yourself. The path to embracing your textured hair is not just about hair, but also about personal growth, confidence, and authenticity.

Live Curly, everyone!
Curly hair rarely gives us consistent results. It can be tough to get our locks looking and feeling their best day after day, to the point where you actually have curls you can count on! Frizz, lack of definition, curls falling flat or just plain unruliness. But what if I told you there was a solution to your hair woes? Introducing the power of a gel cast.
If you have avoided "crunchy curls" for years, I understand! I did too! But I have learned that crunchy curls mean I have a great gel cast! Over the years, my hair transformation has shown me firsthand the transformative power of a gel cast. Not only does it help to hold your curls in place, but it also adds a beautiful shine and bounce to your hair. The best part about gel casting, it works for all hair types, whether you have curly or wavy hair. And don't worry- you don't walk around with your gel cast all day- you "scrunch" it out!
So if you are ready for compliments on your beautiful curls everyday, it's time to embrace the power of a gel cast. In this article, I'll explain how a gel cast works, why it's important for your hair care routine, and tips on achieving the perfect gel cast. Prepare to say hello to curls you can count on and create a cast now!
A hair cast is a technique used to enhance curl definition and create frizz-free curls that last. It involves applying a styling gel to wet hair, then allowing the hair to dry while the product forms a cast around each curl.
This technique works well for all hair types, including straight, wavy, and curly hair. By holding the hair in place as it dries, a hair cast can enhance your natural texture and create soft curls full of volume and bounce.
For those with curly hair, a hair cast is particularly effective at enhancing curl definition and preventing frizz. By holding the hair in place as it dries, the cast helps to maintain your curl clumps and create beautiful, bouncy curls while keeping a smoothed hair shaft, which equals less frizz.
Start by applying your preferred styling products to clean and conditioned wet hair. This can include a leave-in conditioner, curl cream, mousse, or gel, depending on your hair type and desired level of hold. Your "cast" product can be added after leave-in conditioners and serums, locking in the moisture. Your "cast" product will need to state that it offers some type of hold. Many gels will say this, and some mousses and other products. I love our AuBonacci gel- it is a very high hold gel! Then, use a diffuser or allow your hair to air dry while the product forms a cast.
During drying, you may notice that your hair feels crunchy or stiff. But don't worry - this is entirely normal! Once your hair is completely dry, and I do mean completely dry, you can use the scrunch out the crunch technique to reveal soft, defined curls full of volume and bounce.
So, how to "Scrunch out Crunch": My preferences is to take a handful of crunchy curls and squeeze in place. No moving or pulling- just put your hand on a section of crunchy curls and squeeze, then release. Move to the next section. If you feel a crunchy section, squeeze it. Other techniques involve running flat hands down each side of the curls, but I don't find this as comfortable for me. Some people like to add a light amount of oil to their hands first and then go through, squeezing any crunch they find. It can take multiple squeezes, be not afraid! Your results will be soft, shiny, defined curls that will last longer than your usual results. This has been a game changer for me!
So no matter your hair type, a hair cast is a powerful technique for achieving frizz-free, defined curls that last. By understanding how it works and using the right products and techniques, you can create beautiful curls that will turn heads wherever you go.
Embrace the technique!
If you're new to the world of gel casts, you may be worried about ending up with crunchy, stiff hair. While some gels can leave your hair feeling crunchy, this is a good thing when creating a gel cast.
The crunchy feeling you get from a gel cast is a sign that the cast is working. By forming a protective shell around each curl, the gel helps to lock in moisture, prevent frizz and maintain your curl clumps, resulting in frizz-free, defined curls that last!
When applying gel for a curl cast, it's important to distribute it evenly throughout your hair, ensuring that every strand is coated. Even application will ensure that your curls are held in place as they dry, without any loose or frizzy sections.
If you've been hesitant to try a gel cast, don't be afraid! Embrace the technique and enjoy the benefits of frizz-free, defined curls that will make you feel confident and beautiful.
Are you ready to achieve bouncy, defined curls without any frizz or flatness? Here's how to get a gel cast for your curly or wavy hair!
I like to start applying my gel at the ends first. I put the gel in my wet hands, rub them together to emulsify everything, and then gently squeeze end sections of hair. Then I work my way up the hair shafts, squeezing from up and under and from the outside and top. When I I have gotten my longer strands, I sometimes have to add a tiny bit more water and gel to my hands and then work on applying to my hair at the crown and where I later want to add hair volume with the AuBonacci Styler. Here I will get my fingers in closer to the roots and through the length of hair. I use my hands to work the gel into my hair, and re-wet them and that section of hair with water if I feel I have put to much gel in any one spot. Lots of squeezing and squishing, but all gentle. You will get a feel for it after several times. Don't be afraid to experiment a bit. Don't experiment on picture day, but do experiment! Sometimes I will also start with my head upside down and squish the gel into my hair evenly that way, and then flip up to finish and make sure I get the crown.
My hair always looks darker when the cast is still in my hair. However, once I have scrunched out the crunch, my natural color shines through. So don't be afraid to try gel for your curly or wavy hair. Following these simple steps, you can achieve voluminous, frizz-free curls that will last all day!
When it comes to styling your hair, there are so many products to choose from. It can be overwhelming to decide which styling product is right for you. However, if you're looking to achieve the perfect gel cast, we will go over my all-time favorite as well as what I used to use before creating my own unique formula. You will definitely want the AuBonacci High Hold Gel in your curly arsenal as it is the best strong-hold gel and lasts in Florida's high humidity~!
These are a few of my product recommendations on hair gel for achieving the best gel cast. Check out my full article about these hair gels and see what I had to say about each. By using the right hair products and scrunching out the crunch, you can create beautiful, well-defined curls that last all day long.
If you're new to the world of gel casts, you may be wondering why anyone would want their hair to feel crunchy in the first place. It's important to remember that the gel cast isn't meant to last forever. It is a step in the process. Once your hair is dry, you scrunch out the crunchy feeling to soften your curls!
While it's true that a crunchy gel cast may feel a bit strange at first, the result is worth it: frizz-free curls that last for days.
The key to achieving a gel cast: a stronger gel, and enough of it. But how much is enough? Of course that is different for every head of hair. Start by using a small amount of gel in your hands and work it through your wet hair. If you can't really feel it at all in your hair, add a bit more. If there is not cast or "crunch" to your curls when it dries, add more gel next time.
Overall, a gel cast is powerful for achieving frizz-free, defined curls that last. While it may take some experimentation to find the right products and application techniques for your hair type, the result is well worth it: beautiful, bouncy curls that will turn heads wherever you go.

In this blog post, I will share my top tips on how to care for your curly hair. I will cover everything from understanding your curly locks to creating a haircare routine that works for you! So if you're ready to learn to love your curls, keep reading!
]]>Whether you have wavy or curly hair, understanding and recognizing your curl pattern is essential in learning to properly take care of your hair. Many times women have multiple curly patterns. I range from a 2c - 3B; the underside of my hair tends to have less curl.
Knowing which curl pattern your hair falls into depends on the wave's shape, with straight hair being 0A, wavy hairstyles 2A and 2C, and more coil hair patterns such as 4C can be referred to as kinky. All wavy hair types begin at 2A and increase according to wave pattern until it reaches a maximum of 2C.
Keep in mind that all hair types vary from person to person, so recognizing your unique wave pattern will go a long way in helping you care for your luscious locks!
2A hair has the slightest wave. This curl-type pattern lies somewhere in between total straightness and wavy. It's described as wavy with a slight S-shaped bend, which gives it tons of wavy volume, body, and bounce. The waviness of this type of curl pattern becomes more noticeable when the hair is shorter or air-dried - so don't be afraid to experiment and find your inner curl!
2B hair is wavy hair with a more defined S-shaped bend. It looks bouncy with big, beautiful waves that you can easily style into beachy styles or show off as they are. With proper care and nourishing products, your 2B hair can become shiny and frizz-free; you'll be amazed! To get the most out of your curls, invest in some great hair products that moisturize and define and are designed specifically for curly hair to keep your waves looking wavy and fabulous!
2C hair is wavy/curly with well-defined S-shaped curls and getting very close to creating a spiral definition. You may even start to see those ringlet patterns. Picture a corkscrew pattern in your 2C hair. When it comes to managing 2C curls, I will share many tips and tricks below to keep your hair looking its best.
3A hair has soft, defined curls that take on a coil-like shape. This curl pattern can be seen in both medium-textured and fine-haired individuals. 3A curls usually have a noticeable "S" shape, and when properly cared for, these coils become shiny and voluminous. Invest in curly-haired products to keep the strands moisturized and protected from damage. With just a few simple steps, you can give your 3A curls the attention they deserve!
Having natural 2c curls has many benefits - it can create natural waves, add volume and bring life to any style. Style in any way you like, whether you prefer loose natural curls, defined structured curls, or something more wild and carefree.
Those with 2c hair will also appreciate the natural ability to 'clump' their curls and waves without worrying about extra products or manipulations. Naturally wavy hair can also take less time and effort to style, as any girl with straight hair who has tried to get some wave will tell you! You will not need high heat to get your waves, leaving your hair healthier and stronger.
Ultimately, embracing natural 2c curls brings out the beautiful texture of your hair while adding a touch of timeless charm and class.
Caring for 2c curly hair can be a challenge since its natural texture can present unique problems. Maintaining luscious curls may seem like it requires more work at first, but the truth is, it requires particular products and techniques. Once learned, the right products and techniques will deliver curly results you will love.
It often requires a bit of trial and error before finding the right product, technique, or combination that accommodates your particular natural wave pattern.
Frustration is natural when trying to care for 2c curly hair - especially if you have limited knowledge - but with the right tips, tricks, and products, you can soon learn how to quickly bring out your natural wavy texture.
Taking care of 2C Curly hair does not have to be daunting, and with a few haircare tips and styling tricks, you can easily make your curls look their best!
The first tip is to opt for a satin (or even better, silk) pillowcase when you go to bed. These pillowcases help reduce drag on your hair when you move during your sleep. It seems subtle, but reducing this drag can reduce frizz and breakage, ensuring your curls stay defined and intact in the morning.
Secondly, avoid hot tools like curling irons or straighteners as much as possible to keep your hair from becoming damaged. Keep in mind, even non-electric, metal styling tools can be very hard on hair.
Thirdly, invest in hair products designed for curly hair. Your curls are different from straight hair, and products for curly hair will help ensure your hair stays hydrated and healthy.
Finally, learn to assess your hair in different environments and in different seasons. The dry winter is a wonderful time to incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine monthly or weekly, or to ensure you have a moisturizing leave-in product to help replenish lost moisture.
In the summer, if you are at the beach or in and out of pools, you will also need to ensure you have leave-in moisturizing products on that fabulous hair. Look for leave-in moisturizing products that have UV protection as well.
With these helpful 2C Curly hair tips, you will surely have beautiful, healthy curls!
Caring for your 2c curls requires a special routine and the right maintenance techniques to keep them healthy and beautiful! Implementing products specifically designed for curly hair can be a great start.
Focus on air-drying your hair as much as possible, and when you need to blow dry it, use a diffuser to prevent blowing out the natural shape of your waves and curls. My favorite hair dyer is the Dyson; however, I had good luck with Chi and Shark blow dryers before I purchased from Dyson, and Conair can also do the trick- the key is the diffuser attachment.
To get that added hydration, apply a moisturizing leave-in product after you have rinsed your conditioner. Your hair should be "squishy" wet, and with the leave-in cream should feel very smooth and slippery. Applying a serum will help lock the moisture in and protect hair from the elements while adding shine. Rake through your hair and gently squish to make sure distributed.
At this point, gently holding hair with a t-shirt will take care of drips without adding frizz. The next step is gel to help create and hold definition. With the gel in, gently squeeze to encourage your wave and curl pattern.
From here, you can diffuse or air dry. If you like some lift and direction at the roots, this is a great time to use your AuBonacci styler along the crown and around your face. Gently diffuse the rest.
Once dry, you should have some crunchy spots- this is temporary! Simply squeeze the crunchy spots. It is called "scrunching out the crunch". The crunchy feel and stringy look will reveal beautiful, defined waves and curls, with wonderful hold and great frizz protection. Do not be afraid of the crunch!
Some people like to put a little oil in their hands when they scrunch out the crunch. Another technique is the use the diffuser as you scrunch. The most important thing is to ensure hair is dry before scrunching out the crunch.
With this routine, your 2c curls will stay in tip-top shape!
If you're looking for hair care trimming tips for your 2C curly hair, there are a few things to keep in mind. You can check out this article on How to Tame the Frizz for more details.
First, always visit a hairstylist who understands how to style curly hair — this will save you from unnecessary hair mistakes. Make sure curly clients are their main clients. It is a unique type of hair to cut, and tricky even for specialists, so this is worth the research!
When you see people with beautiful curls, ask them who they go to. Most curly girls are happy to help a fellow curly girl. We have all left the salon in tears at some point!
Secondly, micro trims are key! Trimming off the ends of your hair every 6-8 weeks will help enhance its shape and texture while reducing hair breakage.
Lastly, keep in mind that cutting curly bangs on your hair can be tricky and will require more maintenance. We recommend consulting your hair stylist and getting their advice before cutting — they know best!
If unwanted frizz makes you feel like a stressed-out mess, there is an answer! Whatever your natural 2C curly hair type, some tried and true tips can help you say goodbye to unwanted frizz. Check out this article Why is my hair staticky - 5 tips to tame for more detailed advice.
Think moisture! Think locking in moisture! Think protection from the environment!
Firstly, invest in a good-quality shampoo and conditioner that works with your hair type. This will go a long way toward frizz-free hair.
Secondly, a leave-in moisturizer, followed by a serum and gel, will moisturize, seal, and protect! By choosing a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and leave-in cream, you will keep your locks hydrated to help prevent taking on moisture from the environment (which equals frizz!).
Finally, finish off the look with an anti-frizz product of your choosing is essential! A high hold gel and holding spray are my choices here in Florida. This will provide a finished look and keep frizz at bay. Now you can run through the day with worry-free curls that look stunningly shiny and healthy!
When caring for 2c curly hair, keep in mind that it is not helpful or necessary to wash your hair every day. If possible, avoid over-washing your hair! Over washed and over-worked hair will tend to be dry, frizzy, and easily breakable. Be gentle with your wet tresses.
Some people even use cold water to be extra gentle, but the water would have to be extremely hot to damage your curls. If you don't like cold hair washes, don't worry! But we encourage you to find what works best for YOU, so try out the different approaches. Great tips in my article The Best Curly Hair Washing Tips sharing more details.
Two simple techniques for removing water from wet hair are air-drying and towel-drying (we recommend a t-shirt towel). Air drying is beneficial, but if you don't have time, or want faster results, reach for a t-shirt or a microfiber towel to towel dry your mane. If you need to blow dry your hair, make sure you use the diffuser attachment!
Maximizing your 2c hair texture can seem daunting when you aren't sure what to do, but once you find your groove, you will be unstoppable! So, take the time to find your groove! The great thing about 2c hair is that you probably have a mixture of different curl types and textures, which makes it easy to create gorgeous styles!
Some key takeaways: When distributing product, start with a wide tooth comb, or a Denman style brush (not thin bristles!) or your fingers to help separate your hair into clumps. Gently squeeze hair with styling products to encourage curls.
When dry, DO NOT be afraid of crunchy hair- this means great results await you after you scrunch out the crunch! A complete routine is in this article. Find the right hairstyling products that work best with your hair, regardless of the style you prefer to rock.
Take some time to experiment with different products and techniques like scrunching and finger-coiling until you find something that works - and don't be afraid to change it up now and then. With the proper styling routine, you'll soon be bringing out the full potential of your 2c curls!
Are you looking for the best products to get your 2c curly hair tip-top shape? Caring for these beautiful locks can be tricky, but with the right know-how and a few practical products, you'll have shiny, healthy, and manageable curls in no time.
Leave-in conditioners are essential as they help to preserve natural oils within the hair shaft and close down rough cuticles.
Styling products like creams or gels enhance definition and keep strands hydrated. With these simple steps, your 2c curls will look their absolute best!
Curly hair is beautiful and unique, but it comes with its own set of challenges. I hope this guide has helped you better understand your 2c curls and how to care for them.
Remember, finding what works for YOU and YOUR hair is the most important thing. Experiment with different products, routines, and styles until you find what makes your curl pop. And don't forget to enjoy the journey!

]]>Do you know what's really interesting? Static electricity can be caused by different things, like dry air and heated indoor environments. When the air is dry, it can make it easier for electrons to move around and create that build-up of an electric charge we call static electricity.
There is always a percentage of moisture in the air. As curly girls, we know that when the humidity (moisture) is high, we can end up fighting frizz! Curly hair often thrives in a somewhat dryer climate. Well, when the weather is very dry, the air is dryer and then it is easier for static electricity to happen. And sometimes, when we're inside our houses or buildings, the air can dry because the heat is on, making it easier for static electricity to happen. So, the next time you feel a spark when you touch someone or something, you'll know it's because of the dry weather. (Or true love!)
Static hair is when your hair builds an electric charge that is generated by friction and changes in temperature. The strands of your hair, once “charged”, repel each other, and make the hair frizzy and hard to style.
Adding to the elements, the lack of moisture within the atmosphere, and the heating of the indoor environment can also contribute to static hairs. Because winter air typically does not have much humidity, it can cause more static electricity, especially toward the end of the winter season.
Do you know what's fun to learn about hair? The different types of hair! One type of hair you may have heard of is static hair. Another type of hair is frizzy hair. Do you know the difference between the two?
Static hair is the kind of hair that sticks up or sticks together when the air is dry or if you rub it against something (like pulling a hat on and off, or pulling a shirt over your head). It's caused by a build-up of electricity on the hair's surface. It can be annoying, but it's easy to fix! You can use a brush or a comb to smooth it out or spray or cream to tame it down.
Frizzy hair, on the other hand, looks rough and puffy. It can be caused by many different things, like damaged hair, humidity, or using the wrong type of hair products. Frizzy hair can be harder to fix, with solutions that include products and techniques combined. A solution to try is using moisturizing hair products followed by products that provide hold and “seal” the moisture in, creating a barrier to humidity.
So, remember, static hair is caused by dry air, and it's easy to fix; while many things can cause frizzy hair, it's essential to find the right products and techniques to tame it.
Do you know what's important for healthy hair? Taking care of it! One of the things that can happen when we don't take care of our hair is that it can become brittle. Brittle hair breaks easily and is hard to style. Do you know what can cause this? Chemicals and hot tools. The chemicals and heat can each damage the hair and make it brittle.
Avoid or limit the use of hot tools, like flat irons or curling wands. Heat styling tools can damage the hair and make it brittle. To keep your hair healthy, it's important to avoid using these hot tools too much. If you must, you can use heat-protectant products before styling your hair with heat tools.
And remember, if your hair is brittle, also be careful with non-electric metal styling tools, metal clips, metal barrettes and rubber bands. All very hard on brittle hair.
Chemicals…such as permanents or color treatments. Oh No! The majority of women will at some point in their curly lives decide they need some highlights, or root touch ups, or a brand new color altogether. This can be hard on your hair, so it is important to choose hair products that are safe for color treated or chemically processed hair, so that you pamper your hair with your day-to-day care. (PLEASE don’t chemically straighten your hair. I did this in high school- plus I added the insult of Sun-In. It wasn’t pretty).
Hats are a key wardrobe accessory for winter because of the cold, but they can leave your hair dry! When we wear hats, especially knit hats, our hair can get a little bit staticky when we take them off. Do you know why that happens? It's because the hat can rub against our hair and make our hair's electrons move around, creating static electricity! In fact, it’s the perfect environment for static electricity.
But don't worry! There are ways to tame static hat hair. One way is to use a leave-in conditioner or a styling cream before putting on your hat. This can help to keep your hair smooth and calm.
Another way is to dampen your hair before putting on your hat. Wet hair is less likely to create static. And when you take off your hat, you can use a wide-toothed comb to comb out your hair gently, or you can use a styling product specifically designed for static hair.
"Very simply put, static flyaways happen when the hair or the environment around the hair is dry, so moisture is the answer," explains NYC salon owner Oscar Blandi. Try adding an extra weekly deep-conditioning treatment to your usual hair care routine. "Conditioning products help hair retain moisture and keep strands weighed down--in a good way--which is the best way to fight static."
So remember, conditioner is your friend during the winter months. You can use a leave-in conditioner, mist your hair, or a styling product for static hair. And don't forget to be gentle when combing or brushing your hair after taking off your hat.
Staticky hair can be a real nuisance. It's often static-prone, challenging to style and manage, and can lack the shine and luster that healthy hair has. Many people turn to curly hair products during the winter months.
Curly hair products leave your hair moisturized, which is what your hair needs in the winter months. Here are five simple tips for taming dry hair to look your best.
You probably already have this solution in your house! Dryer sheets are designed to calm down the electrons that cause static electricity. When you use a dryer sheet on your hair, it can help to make your hair less staticky and more smooth. They now also make anti-static sheets specially designed to reduce static in your hair.
You can use an anti-static sheet by gently rubbing it over your hair to tame your hair. You can use it on both dry and damp hair. You can also keep a dryer sheet in your pocket, in your purse, or in your backpack, and when you feel your hair getting static, you can smooth it over your hair.
So, remember, anti-static sheets can be a helpful way to tame hair static during winter or dry weather.
Curly hair tends to be naturally drier than straight hair, which makes it more prone to static electricity. Moisturizing shampoos can be beneficial for curly hair as they add hydration to the hair shaft, making it less likely to become staticky.
Using shampoo and conditioner that add back moisture is a great way to keep any hair type looking bouncy and frizz-free by adding the necessary hydration to the hair, making it less prone to static.
A conditioner can help to add moisture back into the hair, making it less likely to become staticky. So, if you're struggling with staticky hair, try using a good quality conditioner after shampooing and see the difference it makes. The right conditioner can be your secret weapon in keeping your hair smooth, shiny, and static-free. Use a conditioner with good slip, so you can easily detangle completely while wet with conditioner. The less you manipulate your hair as it dries and is dry, the less chance of static! (this is true for frizz as well)
Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and bamboo are more absorbent than synthetic fibers, and can help absorb excess water from your hair more effectively.
By absorbing excess water from your hair, a natural fiber towel can help to reduce the amount of water in your hair without excess friction and therefore reduce the potential for static. Unlike synthetic fibers, natural fabrics are less likely to cause friction on the hair.
Friction between hair strands can cause the hair to become more staticky. So, using a natural fiber towel can help to minimize friction and help prevent static hair.
Leave-in creams or conditioners can help to prevent static hair in a few different ways. As mentioned before, dry hair is more prone to static electricity because it lacks moisture that helps to keep the hair shaft smooth and prevent friction.
Leave-in creams or conditioners help moisturize the hair and can also help detangle and smooth the hair, which can help reduce static. When hair is tangled, it can rub against itself and other surfaces, causing friction and static. By keeping the hair smooth and detangled, a leave-in cream or conditioner can help to reduce the potential for static.
If static hair is causing you grief, then AuBonacci can help with the solution to help tame static and make your hair look smooth and shiny. AuBonacci can keep static under control so you can enjoy beautiful locks all day long!

]]>As someone with curly hair, you know that washing and styling your locks can be a bit of a challenge. If you're not careful, you can end up with dry, frizzy hair that's difficult to manage. But with the right products and techniques, you can achieve beautiful, bouncy curls that are healthy and easy to style.
Wash your curly hair with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your locks hydrated and looking their best. Avoid using shampoos that don't have some moisturizing ingredients or leave curly hair feeling dry and brittle. Opt for products specifically designed for curly hair, which will cleanse your scalp without stripping away moisture.
Curly hair as we know is a tad on the drier side naturally, so when shampooing, focus on the scalp; gently massage and let the shampoo rinse out throughout the ends. If I am washing frequently, I will often put conditioner on the ends of my hair and then apply the shampoo to the scalp. I still follow with conditioner all over! When conditioning, again, always good to focus on drier sections, generally from the ears down to the ends of the hair shaft.
Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove build-up from styling products. Aveda Rosemary Mint Clarifying Shampoo is my go-to.
Curly hair is prone to dryness, so it's important to add a deep conditioning treatment to your moisturizing plan. Some people enjoy this weekly, some once a month, or some adopt it in the drier month’s vs the rest of the year. Play with it to find your sweet spot! Try out different treatments! One wonderful way to get all the benefit is to apply a deep conditioner to damp hair, cover your head with a shower cap and let it soak in before rinsing.
A hot oil treatment can help to add moisture and shine to curly hair. Apply the treatment to damp hair, then cover your head with a shower cap and let it sit for the recommended time before rinsing. An oldie but a goodie: Alberto VO5 hot oil treatment.
High heat tools can damage your fragile curls. Blow drying on high heat can strip the moisture from your hair. Flat ironing or using a curling iron can cause damage to your hair follicles over time. Plus, if you straighten curly hair, you know if you hit any humidity your curls are going to try to show up anyway! Embrace the curly journey and get rid of the high heat tools. I know some of you cannot see joining the curly journey on the daily. I get it and it took me quite a while before I embraced it 100%. So, if you are dying to curl or flat iron your hair, PLEASE make sure you are using heat protecting products to protect your hair follicles. Your curls will thank you for it! Look for products that say they provide thermal protection. Also don't forget UV protection! We realize more and more the damaging effects of unfiltered sun exposure. While we love it, we do need to keep SPF in mind for our skin, and UV protection in mind for our curls!
When washing curly hair, it makes a definite difference to use products that are specifically designed for curly hair. Your curls need you to help hydrate them and tame the frizz!

When it comes to curly hair, less is often more when it comes to washing. Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair, so washing it too frequently can strip away vital moisture and leave your locks looking dull and lifeless.
Generally, curly hair should be washed every three to four days. However, this may vary depending on your individual hair type. I am thrilled if I'm on a busy trip and my hair is looking great through day 5 with just refreshes! I have also seen some people who do challenges to see how long they can go without washing their curls, and their curls can go either way- they may look wonderful because they naturally are more moisturized because they get oilier, or....they look scraggly and dirty. Either way, I don't think I could take it! I love how it feels to get a good wash!
Be sure to condition your hair every time you shampoo to keep it hydrated and looking its best. If your hair feels oily in between washes, try using a dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.
Generally curly-haired women should wash their curly hair with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. They should avoid using shampoos that don't have some moisturizing ingredients or leave curly hair feeling dry and brittle. It is best to wash curly hair every few days or once a week. If curly hair feels oily in between washes and you aren't ready to wash, use a dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.
We haven't touched on protein vs moisture in products. A quick tip: If curls are too soft and losing shape, it may be too much moisture. If curls feel very dry and straw-like, but you have been moisturizing, it may be too much protein. Either way, do a clarifying wash and start over- it should make a big difference. It doesn't mean you have done something wrong- it just means you are learning to listen to your hair and it's needs. Follow these curly hair washing tips to achieve beautiful, bouncy curls that are healthy and easy to style.

These curly tips and tricks will have you embracing your curly hair every day!
A good hair cut is the foundation to loving your curls. It helps reduce frizz and gives your curls some new bounce. Did you know that more the 65% of women have some form of curly hair. I was shocked by this number. In spite of this, it is not easy to find stylists who know how to cut curly hair. Since I have started embracing my curls, I couldn’t be happier with the results. Now that I have these fabulous results, I definitely don’t want to go to the wrong stylist. Some stylists had approaches that didn't seem to make any allowance for my hair being curly....and I paid the price, going home with disasters more than once. How do you find a stylist who understands?
Finding a good curly stylist seems hard at first, but you just need to know where to look. You want someone who is experienced with curly clients. Try searching on Instagram under #curlystylists, #curlysalon, #curlspecialist. Do a similar search on Face Book. Look for salons or stylists on LinkedIn in your area. They are out there so keep looking! If you are ever in the Chicago area, check out www.akurlysalon.com for a great curly cut. Say hi to Andrea for us!
One of the best things you can do for your curly hair is to invest in a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Look for products that are specifically designed for curly hair and avoid those that contain harsh chemicals or sulfates; they can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy. Instead, opt for a gentle moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that will help to keep your hair hydrated and looking its best.
Hot off the presses The Curly Life Company has launched the AuBonacci Hair Care Line to moisturize and protect those luscious curls. Look no further! These products are a sure way to embrace your curls on the daily. They have an energizing citrus fragrance and don’t weigh your hair down. You are going to love them!
Once you've cleansed and conditioned your hair, it's time to style! Keep in mind every hair type and curl type will respond a little differently, so play with your products! Have fun with this and find the right amount that makes sense for you.
The AuBonacci Curl Styling Cream will amplify, define, and separate while adding volume, shine and texture. Retains curl and reduces frizz for a radiant, touchable finish. The Curl Styling Cream will help to add moisture and definition to your curls. Apply before styling or after washing and conditioning your hair.
The AuBonacci Curl Styling Serum is an amazing Keratin-infused leave-in serum, with Red Algae and ProVitamin B5. This serum seals the cuticle to control frizz, locking in the moisture from your leave-in curl styling cream and protecting from everything else you’re going to do to those curls! Improved shine and bounce are promised! Safe for colored and chemically treated hair.
The AuBonacci High Hold Gel: Give those curls a fighting chance! This high-hold gel protects your moisturized, shiny curls from humidity and UV rays. Apply to wet hair and rake through with fingers or comb to distribute gently. Use an upward motion when distributing through root areas. To encourage curl formation, gently and slowly scrunch curls up, holding briefly before releasing. Diffuse to help dry your hair and add volume. This will help to minimize frizz and give your curls the definition you long for!
Finally, don't forget the finishing touches! The AuBonacci Curl Styling Final Touch: Keeps those curls the way you want them; keeps volume going and provides long-lasting curl definition. Spray on and hit with the diffuser so it doesn’t sit “wet” on the hair for more than a moment.
These products will help you fall in love with your curls. You can enjoy beautiful, healthy, curly hair all season long!
When looking for a more natural look, try drying your hair with a diffuser attachment. Investing in a diffuser will help soften the curls and help them to look natural. This simple tool can help you achieve definition and volume without frizz. Using your diffuser creates fuller looking hair, and bouncier curls. The diffuser also helps keep your curls in clumps which reduces frizz and helps create luscious curls.
A diffuser disperses air evenly and halts curls from drying out. To use, simply place your diffuser onto your blow dryer and aim it at your roots. Then, move around your head, slowly drying where needed. After drying is complete, use the SOTC (Scrunching Out the Crunch) method, gently squeezing sections of your hair to break the cast. I like to use a t-shirt towel to soften the curls as I scrunch.
Don't forget the power of spot styling. When you have curly hair you can’t use styling tools with bristles- it just doesn’t work! That old round brush you used with straight hair that would give you lift at the root - it is NOT going to work for you now. So how do you get that lift at the root, and how do you direct your curls, if you can’t use that ol’ bristle brush?
The AuBonacci Styler! The AuBonacci Styler is the best spot styling tool for curly hair. If you have a particular section of hair that looks flat or lifeless, simply slide your styler towards your roots, give it a quarter turn until there is some tension, then a short blast with your diffuser to set it! Slide the styler out of the curl and do the next “spot”. Viola, you now have lifted and directed your roots and added volume at the crown. This process can be followed anywhere you need to add volume or help tame unruly sections.
The styling pins on the AuBonacci Styler are designed to glide into the sections of hair where you need a boost and slide out without gripping or tangling in your hair. This product is like none other on the market. It was built in America and designed to withstand being dropped on tile floors!
Enjoy the learning experience with your curly locks. Everyone is different and unique. Hair is no different. Explore products and find what works for you. Don’t feel the pressure of society to look a certain way. You get out there and define you! Remember you are worth it! Invest a little time and experience and get the products that work for you and your curly hair.

]]>Flat on top, wide to the sides, and no easy way to fix it! That’s why!
It takes time to clip and air dry, and the results aren’t always great from clipping (but you don’t know that until it’s too late). It also takes too much time to wait until it’s all dry and then use a curling iron to spot style, and you don’t want the damage of a hot iron!
If your hair is straight, you can use a round brush at the roots and create lift and direction. But with curly hair, what do you do when you need to do something about your roots which are lying flat or going in bizarre directions?
Regular brushes are ideal for straight hair but believe it or not, curly hair isn’t like straight hair. What?!? Some curly-haired styling tools out there seem to be better at damaging curls than working with them. How many times have you wound up on the losing end of a hair-pulling fight with a brush with bristles? If you’re blessed with curly hair, then the answer is plenty of times!
It’s almost like no curly-haired women are designing these products! Are we that hard to find?
While I’m happy that my curls will always help me stand out, sometimes my blessing makes finding the right solutions harder than it needs to be.
Off-brand brushes clump your curls together, creating a tangled mess that can take hours to fix. If bristles are too rough, your curls could, at best, become brittle, and at worst, lose their natural shape altogether! You know that infuriating moment when you realize you just pulled a perfectly good curl off of your head? You can thank rough bristles for that. You’ll have to completely re-wet to try to get that back. Sometimes it’s a wash day do-over.
Some brushes have features intended to make using them more comfortable, like tiny epoxy balls at the end of their bristles, but those can also end up doing more harm than good. Any sort of cushion around the bristle will make it easier for your curls to get tangled in knots. This counts double if your brush's bristles are too close together. Each curl needs its own space to shine.
Curly hair tends to clog up already temperamental store-bought brushes in about two weeks. I can do it in one brush-out if I’m working out some tangles! There is always hair “shedding” as this is just part of natural hair growth cycles. However, you don’t want to pull out any extra, or at a faster rate, by using the wrong styling tool with bristly brushes! Replacing brushes is pricey and if the tool that’s supposed to be protecting your curls is removing them, then something needs to change. Curly hair is unique, and it demands a tool uniquely attuned to its needs. No cookie-cutter solutions, here!
The AuBonacci styler is a curly hair spot-styling tool specifically designed by a woman with curly hair for women with curly hair. Its proprietary design gives you more lift, less frizz, and more control than any other brush currently on the market (and believe me, I’ve looked). It’s straightforward design is deceptively simple. It is designed to be lightweight, saving your arms and shoulders from any styling fatigue. The pins are designed to be smooth and strong, with just a little give. It will withstand drops on tile floors; it is designed to last. All you need is the styler and a blow dryer. You’ll be done in minutes! Sooo much faster than clips and air drying, or finger styling.
What sets the AuBonnaci Styler apart? To prevent pulling and frizzing your curls, the AuBonacci Styler uses twelve unique, smooth “pins”, rather than thin, traditional bristles, to style and protect your curls. Instead of simply pulling, the AuBonnaci styler groups your curls directly from the root, so you can lift, direct and create volume—every time! Slide the pins into the root area, then lift and rotate about a half turn, until there is a little tension and you have created a curve in that section of your hair. Diffuse, and then slide the AuBonacci Styler out of the curl- don’t unwind the curl- just slide the styler out the side. Use this technique to spot style those pesky root areas that want to plaster straight down on your scalp, or go in directions that make no sense.
What does this all mean? This means that targeting specific areas to create lift and direction is fast and easy. You’ll be able to count on creating more consistent results every time! You will love your curls even more 😊!
So get rid of those useless off-brand brushes, ditch time-consuming finger styling, don’t worry about clip placement and extensive time spent air drying, and treat your hair to the AuBonacci Styler. It’s a wonderful addition to your curly hair styling toolbox!

I heard Mell say, in one of her Manes by Mell videos, that you can’t be lazy with your hair and expect good results. I needed to hear that! I realized I was lazy with my hair- I just wanted a product to solve everything. I didn’t want to “fuss”. I really didn’t want to do any new steps or process or technique of any kind.
Wait a minute though, I was already doing some steps and techniques- or else how did I get my hair clean? And why would I stay so committed to those steps and techniques when the results weren’t what I wanted? Why was I so resistant to change?! Well, because I’m human- we are human- but that’s another topic for another blog!
There are answers to every hair question you have. Realize that yes, there are some steps to take, there are techniques and tips that will help you get better results. By taking the time now to do a little research on your biggest hair challenges, you will save many hours and avoid frustration for years to come. You will have more confidence! And as you do it more, it will become as easy as your current routine. Because you do have a routine! But if you don’t like your results, it’s not the RIGHT routine.
Get the tools that will help you get good results more quickly and more consistently.
And buy accessories! Scarves, barrettes, clips, scrunchies, head bands, ZazzyBandz, wraps…
Get the good stuff: Why do we skimp on things we use every day, and then pay $10 for a cup of coffee without blinking?! Get the good blow dryer. Hang the side mirror. Set up your hair goodies where you can see them. Spend a little time working on that messy bun look, so that next time it will be faster. What is a sporty look that you like? Do it a few times- and then you have your go-to sporty look. There are so many things we don’t do, not because they are impossible, but because we haven’t done them enough times to do them without thinking about it. Well, DO THEM! It won’t take that many times, and you will have a new go-to look for days that you decide you ARE going to go for the bike ride.
And- make it more fun when you are fixing your hair! I know you have a phone; play some favorite music. Put on your karaoke app. Listen to something inspirational. Watch a movie or show you love. I know the blow dryer is loud- so sing! It’s a great time to bop around and belt a few tunes out. Smile at yourself!! You’re looking in the mirror- why are you so serious?
I can get my hair done, enough, in 10 minutes, to run out the door and let it finish drying in the car with great results! If I’m not running out the door, I can be 80-90% dry in 20 minutes with hair ready for anything!
Here is my go-to routine. The products vary- but this process is what works for me. Now, don’t be lazy! Do a little bit of research on hair care routines for your hair type, try out a few- and then you will find a routine that works for you. Try this one out, see what works, what doesn’t. Build on that!
If your hair is frizzy wet, it will be frizzy dry! If you see frizz at this step, rewet your hair and brush through again to smooth out.
Of course, depending on a day in your curly life, or a night, a pillow, maybe a bike ride, etc., your hair will probably need a refresh at some point. To refresh the root areas for lift and frizz, wet your hair, brush through to smooth, and then use the AuBonacci to style those spots. The water will reactivate your product, and you will feel it in your hair when you brush through.
If it is just a few hairs that are acting up, I will wet my fingers and run them down those strands. Again, this reactivates the product and calms down the frizz. If you haven’t tried this before, it can seem like a lot of trouble, but once you’ve done it a few times you will find it a great quick fix that has a nice impact on the overall look.
If it is just a refresh or touchup for more lift or to redirect a curl on top or around my face, and no frizz, I rewet that area – not even the length of the section, just the root area- and use the styler.
People talk about the curly hair journey, and that it took their hair so long to finally respond, but I think it’s more about how long it takes to figure out what you need to do, and then, what you are willing to do, to get better results. Keep going until you know what to do with YOUR curly hair!

]]>Yes, I said Gel.
Your curls might need a little extra love, but so do all the best things worth having in life! Cute, curly hairstyles are beautiful, unique, and 100% worth the special attention they require to maintain. But special attention does not mean more time! Work smarter, not harder! As with so many things in life, spend a little time in research, and then focus on what works most efficiently. Gel can help you achieve fabulous looks in a lot less time.
This blog is about figuring out the right amount of gel to deliver curls you can love.
What does it look like? As we said, it will look wet. It will not have frizz. It may look stringy.
What does it feel like? It should feel “crunchy” and even hard. This crunchy coating is known as the Cast.
Okay, now you have observed your hair and it’s response to gel. You have embraced Cast and learned how to SOTC so you will never fear Cast again.
Observations you may have:
What are some great gels? Here is a lineup of my top 6 tried and true curly hair gels:
#6 Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls
This is my go-to when having crazy active play days- like, beach vacation, swimming, paddle boarding, beach, repeat! I throw this on after swimming, so my hair is curly and shiny and a little wild when I cruise along on the paddle board, or bike, or on the beach. Then, after playing all day it is great after a quick shower when I need to throw a sun dress on and head out to the patio for catch of the day on the grill.
#5 AG Hair Care Spray Gel
I am Loving AGHair products! These are new to me but have become quick favorites. The spray gel is wonderful AND acts as a thermal protectant. It has silk and keratin protein. You can use a little or a lot. Try it out- it is always worth it to experiment different amounts. You can do a different amount on each side to get a quick side by side result! (Their trigger spray is GREAT for refreshing your curls- but that is another blog article!)
#4 Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel
This was my first Gel love. It is thin- more like a liquid than a gel- but Oh! It coats so nicely, and smells amazing, and it is Aveda, so all kinds of good ingredients. It offers lovely cast! Great curl definition, long lasting hold, especially effective in lower humidity settings. It is wonderful in the winter.
#3 Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Gel
If you have a special date and live in a humid climate, you should buy this immediately! This really does make a difference in higher humidity. Don’t be afraid of the harder Cast- that means it is working! And bring a little container of it in your purse in case you need to spot style while you are out!
#2 Tresemme Mega Firm Control Gel
This makes the list at #2 because no matter how much money you have, no matter where you are, you can get this gel. It delivers, and it is in every walgreens, cvs and Walmart across America. When you realize you left your favorite styling products at home but you don’t have $100+ to go to Ulta and re-purchase them all, just do a quick stop at any local drug store and grab this. I can tell you this will cover even having to work with hotel shampoo and conditioner. I wouldn’t do it forever, but in a pinch- absolutely! Also, I like using this if I need a little extra hold in a spot or two.
#1 Curlsmith Fragrance Free Shine Gel #9 Strong Hold
FINALLY I tried Curlsmith- and what was I waiting for?!! The Shine Line is amazing, and this #9 strong hold gel is fabulous. Now, I have not tried it in high humidity yet, because it is only March here in Florida and I am north of Orlando- but humidity is coming, and I will be testing it. The definition and shine is wonderful.
That’s it for now- let me know how you do!
More to come!

]]>What is “normal”? Actual diversity of appearance, whether it be hair, body size, or skin color, is as natural as a fish is in water. Everyone looks different from one another in some way, and that’s perfectly fine. Life would be pretty boring if we all looked the same. So why doesn’t it feel that way? Well, the “normal” that we’re bombarded with through movies, TV, ads, and social media, are all part of an artificial standard. Oftentimes, people who don’t fit this “normal” are not the icons our culture celebrates.
We’ve progressed leaps and bounds in challenging the artificial standard of what is considered “normal” in our media, but we still have a long way to go. I’m not saying you should trash your phone—I love Instagram and other forms of media as much as anyone else—but I find it important to take a step back and remind myself that the digital world is just that: digital. Not reality.
When I was in middle school, I had curls that arrived just as I was headed into puberty. I had stick straight hair when I was in elementary school, and I wore it very long, so I didn't realize that the wave that was developing was actually going to become curls the second I cut my hair. And that day came- I cut it- short- very short. And it exploded- but not evenly. The front was super tiny curls, the sides, curly, but more towards the ends, and the underneath- still straight. And the frizz!! I had no idea what to do with it! This was 1978. Believe it or not, there was no such thing as flat irons then. People actually used irons- like, for clothes!! And you can't iron short hair! I had never styled my hair in any way, so I couldn't even attempt to blow dry it straight- I didn't have the tools or skills. And, there were no products- I can remember trying out brylcreem! It was mainly a mens hair styling ointment at the time. So what happened? I found a little blue handkerchief, and I wore that handkerchief for a YEAR! I was that weird girl in the back of the class.
My hair grew quickly, and at some point, I ventured into trying other approaches. Braiding and barrettes helped. But I was always in a battle to conquer and change my hair, to try to get my hair to be "normal". It decimated my confidence. It took up my thoughts, my time and attention. I tried to keep my head down. I tried to disappear most of the time.
Flash forward to me in my 20s. I was in a car accident that injured my neck and shoulders. The next day, I was able to wash my hair, but there was no way I could blow dry it. I went to work. To my shock, I received compliments all day long on my new perm! No one could believe my hair was that curly, and no one (especially me) could believe how pretty it was!!
So that is how I started my curly journey. It has not been a straight path- pun intended! But it has been a journey that has led me to reconsider so many beliefs and perceptions that I had about myself and my place in the world.
Every time hair is straightened to look “normal," a natural, beautiful part of someone’s identity has been suppressed. Even if it’s not spoken aloud, hiding your curls every day sends a message to your brain saying, “Something is wrong with me”. This couldn't be further from the truth!
It is decades later, and with the wisdom that comes with being in my 50s, that I realize the incredible power shift in owning my unique beauty- whatever it is. I have never gotten as many compliments in my life as I have in the last 2 decades as I embraced my curls more and more. Accepting those compliments was something I had to get comfortable with. I realized I still had that part of me, trying to disappear because I thought I looked so awful, still wanting to hide behind a handkerchief.
There has never been more information about healthy hair, and more support to embrace your curls, and your unique look, whatever it is. I hope you continue down the path of realizing that the things that are unique about you should be supported- not suppressed.
Be shamelessly yourself, and be amazed at how it frees your mind and soul to think about so many other things that can bring you joy- when you're not worried about fixing something, or hiding something. Rock your curls! Rock your freckles! Rock whatever size you are, rock whatever your passion is. And feel the strength and peace and JOY it gives you!
Be the girl that inspires someone else to do the same!
Tell me how you came to love your curls! I would love to hear your story!
]]>There’s an unending list of reasons to love what’s on top of your head, so many that it was hard to narrow them down. But you know what? We love our hair so much we did it anyway. Without further ado, here are the top 3 reasons to love your curly hair!
Most hairstyle options are limited depending on length. Pigtails, ponytails, and buns all require long hair. Bobs and pixie cuts only work for short hair. Short ponytail? Probably not going to work! Long bangs? Weird choice! The bottom line is: most women need to pick a side, long or short, and that’s assuming they can pull off both (bless their hearts, those who can).
Having curls means your hair will look great whether it’s lengthy, trimmed, or anywhere in-between. Plus, any of the styling options at your fingertips are sure to turn heads with your distinct locks. Rocking a curly head means you can skip the agony of month’s-long commitments to styles and lengths every time you get a haircut. Rest easy (on a silk pillow) knowing that your curls will crush it no matter how you choose to wear your hair!
As someone with curls, your blessing is not having to waste your time or money on flat irons or straighteners. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, flat irons are the enemy of curls! While others spend hundreds of dollars and waste hours of their lives straightening their hair artificially, we don’t need to worry about that!
We springy-haired elite don’t need to buy bulky, expensive tools to maintain our look. Not only are those products expensive, but they also take up counter space, they burn, and oh boy do they eat up the day. Lucky us, we can skip the gadgets and gizmos altogether!
Our curly hair might seem finicky, but it’s just misunderstood. All it takes is the right shampoo, conditioners, maybe a blow-dryer if the air isn’t fast enough for you, and one quality brush to protect the natural oils and maintain the volume and bounce. A specialty tool like the AuBonacci Styler, for example, is all you need to put hours back in your day while saving a little extra cash!
Unless you wear a hat, your curls, regardless of length or color, will always stand out in a crowd. Most people will never have curls without expensive, chemically-modified perms. Our heads are like fingerprints, and no two curly girls are exactly alike.
So wear your curls with pride because you’re extremely lucky to have hair as springy and vibrant as you are! Never straighten, never conform, and keep that bouncy head held high because dang you look good, girl!
